If You Could Only Read 7 Spiritually Uplifting Books In 2012 These Should Be The Ones

I get asked this question a lot.

“Dax, what are your favourite spiritual/self development books of all time?”

It’s a kind of difficult one to answer as I’ve read so many books that have had such a huge impact upon my life over the years but if I REALLY had to narrow them down then this would be the top 6 that I feel have had the largest impact.

1. Conversations With God – Neale Donald Walsch

When I first heard aboutConversations With God: An Uncommon Dialogue I was sceptical to say the least. In fact, I was downright cynical, after all, the idea of someone having a direct conversation with God was, to me at least, absurd.

Little did I know that this book was to have such a profound impact on my life… seriously!

This one book (and the series that follow it) have completely revolutionised my outlook on life and led to more spiritual growth than the entire combined spiritual readings I have had the pleasure of experiencing and, when you consider that I’ve read the Bible, the Book of Mormon, The Bhagavad Gita, The Torah, the Talmud, the Koran and pretty much any other spiritual/religious text you’ve ever heard of, this is saying a lot.

Now, just for clarity’s sake, I’d like to confess that I’m not religious at all. I respect people’s right to follow a religious path but I’m not one of those people as I see spirituality as an individual remembrance of who we are (a thought that I held before reading CWG) and a path that we get to choose ourselves rather than having doctrine enforced upon on.

Regardless of whether you believe Walsch spoke to God or even if they’re just his own mad ramblings, the thoughts shared are profound and, for me at least, has helped me to clarify my thinking on who I want to be in life and why.

Be aware though, if you’re a fundamentalist of any kind and are not open to having your beliefs challenged, some of this book will strike you as more profane than profound. Indeed, Walsch has been accused of blasphemy and apostasy  by numerous religions as a result of his message. You’ve been warned :)

Still, as long as you’re open to having your thinking challenged, you’ll love this as much as I do.

 

2. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

Another absolutely fantastic read, The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream is a short read in terms of time taken to read through it but is long lasting in the message about how to go about finding out what’s important in life and how to go about bringing it into your life.

Told in fable form, the story follows the adventures and accidents of a young shepherd who is called to follow his dreams and led on a quest that sees him experiences huge rises and falls in his fortunes. He experiences massive happiness at times and then has to deal with disaster and tragedy shortly after, yet all are there as part of a greater plan, teaching him something he needed to know all along.

A great parable, this amazing story about what REALLY matters in life will touch your heart as it has mine, I’m sure.

 

3. Siddhartha – Herman Hesse

Though I’m not religious at all, I have a very strong affinity for Buddhism and the messages it share, possibly because it’s more of a philosophy rather than a true religion due to its humanistic perspective and lack of deity worship.

I also love the fact that it’s the only ‘religion’ that actively tells you to question what you’ve been taught and to only believe that which you can reproduce in your own experience of life. This is a VERY powerful indicator of wisdom as far as I’m concerned.

Anyway, Siddharta is a very simple yet very moving story that parallells the path and the lessons of the Buddha through the main character Siddartha (Siddartha Gautama was the buddha) who starts his life in wealth and status, leaves home in search of wisdom and spiritual growth, learns from the various spiritual masters yet still finds something to be lacking despite their asceticism.

He then becomes a wealthy trader and indulges his physical senses through food, wine and sex and yet STILL fails to find the enlightenment he seeks.

The conclusion is both expected and unexpected so I won’t ruin it, but the end result is one that is simply uplifting to the soul and deserves to be read again and again.

 

4. Awakening the Buddha Within -Lama Surya Das

 

Again, showing my affinity toward Buddhism, this book Awakening The Buddha Within has been a MAJOR influence in my life in recent times due to the author’s very simple and pragmatic approach to sharing Buddhist principles that can be applied to our lives easily.
The author is the first western Lama and his story of coming from his Jewish roots to becoming a Buddhist spiritual master is as fascinating as the principles he shares for how to live a good life, as a good person making a positive impact on the world whilst leaving a minimal footprint.
Everyone I’ve recommended this to has loved it :)
5. How To See Yourself As You Really Are

Yes, another Buddhist slant on spirituality but this book How to See Yourself As You Really Are: A Practical Guide to Self-Knowledge really deserves a place on this list as HH The Dalai Lama shares a simple, systematic approach to spirituality through helping each of us to hold up the mirror of truth to who we are, what we do and why we do it.

Simply put, His Holiness shares what I call ‘Duh Obvious!’ truths that we will ALL recognise immediately once shared, yet that somehow we’ve all forgotten as we go through our day to day lives.

This very simple yet beautifully written essay on finding yourself amid all the clutter and hustle and bustle of life ha the power to help you see not only yourself as YOU are, but others as they are too. In short, it has the power to dramatically and rapidly change your life.

 

 

 

6. The Power Of Now – Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment is another of those ‘Duh Obvious!’ books that on the one hand seems to confirm things you already know yet on the other hand offers insights that create huge awakenings in your soul. Poetic, I know, flowery, maybe yet 100% true.

In a nutshell, this book is about getting away from the ‘to do list’ mentality of chasing goals and future events, letting go of the past and the stories we all have that anchor us back there and instead, moving into ‘Now thinking’ where the focus is on having the best experience of the moment we are currently in.

A great, powerful and uplifting book that has the power to change you if you let it.

 

 

 

7. The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior – Dan Milman

In The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, author Dan Millman shares the story of finding a peaceful yet powerful way through life through an autobiographical yet parable filled journey through success, failure and hardship and the meeting of the mysterious guru ‘Socrates’ that workd at his local gas station.

The ensuing story is one that shows how we can triumph over adversity in the absence of the usual competitive mindset that most of us have defaulted to and how when we work WITH our gifts and WITH our real selves (that are always with us even when we forget) that we have powers available to us that are beyond any that we could ever have imagined.

A great story full of great lessons and one that will affect you at a level that speaks straight to the very deepest part of who you are.

 

So there you go, my top 7 list.

To be honest, there are hundreds more that I could easily share, yet these 7 are without a doubt contain THE most impactful of the spiritual lessons I’ve been fortunate enough to receive from reading and if you read just one of them with a view to opening your heart and growing spiritually then they’ll deliver that and more.

Pay It Forward – The True Secret To Success And Happiness

Most of the time we go through life feeling like no-one really ‘gets’ or understands us.

Most of the time we’re just waiting for someone to notice our plight and offer us just a few words of encouragement, a few golden nuggets of wisdom or maybe even a hug.

And, of course, when we actually GET those encouragements, words of wisdom and hugs we feel great, right?

So think on this…

Three Questions You MUST Ask If You Want To Achieve Success In 2010!

Well, it’s Christmas day at last and I’m getting ready to hit Disney over here on my family vacation in Florida but before I do I thought I’d take a couple of minutes to leave a little thought for today to help those of you who are already thinking ahead toward 2010.

See, right about now I start working on my 1st MAGIC Hundred list of the year, paying some real thought as to what I want to be, do and have in my life during those first hundred days but before I do, before I start writing out my big ‘wish list’, I always take a little time to ask myself three questions related to my previous attempts at achieving my dreams.

Makes sense when you think about it, after all, if you don’t take the time to learn from both your successes and your mistakes then you’re dooming yourself to repeating unnecessary actions over and over whilst missing out on opportunities to do MORE of what works, right?

So what are these 3 questions?

#1: What worked well? – Simply taking the time to identify all of the things that worked really well for me in 2009 means that I can not only repeat these actions but commit to doing MORE of them… and sooner!

#2: What did I learn? – Every single success and ‘failure’ I make over the course of my year teaches me something and, as long as I pay attention to what I’m being taught, I can apply whatever I’ve learned to accelerate my results the next time around. Funnily enough, most people never really reflect on what they’ve learned in the previous year. Maybe that’s why they tend to make the same mistakes over and over and over and…

#3: What will I do next time? – Yes, I ask (and answer) this question BEFORE I set out on my next round of goals and dreams. This saves the make-it-up-as-I-go-along approach that most people seem to adopt on January 1st. By deciding IN ADVANCE what I’m going to do when faced with a certain problem or puzzle I’m going to avoid that reactive knee-jerk ‘thing’ that most people get when faced with a problem. Saves me so much hassle and negativity too!

So there you go, a nice short message for you today but, hopefully, a useful one.

As you start to think about what 2010 has in store for you over the next few days, try first asking yourself ‘the three questions’ and I guarantee you’ll not only set better goals in the first place, but will be infinitely more likely to have them come true.

STILL Thinking Too Small For Your Goals? Here’s A TRILLION Dollars!

I got an email this morning from one of my MAGIC Hundred Goal Achievement Program readers telling me that although he was making great progress on his MAGIC hundred, he was still struggling to come to terms with his ‘big’ financial goal of breaking the six figure income barrier. He said he just couldn’t believe or see a way that that would ever happen.

I can’t blame him in a way, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was desperate to do the same and I too couldn’t see a way that I could ever make that a reality in my own life  either.

Then one day my mentor Bob Proctor said, “You’ve got to stop thinking small and incrementally and instead focus on achieving the HUGE goals you really want. Instead of trying to increase your monthly or annual income by a fraction, set yourself THIS goal…

…make your annual income your new MONTHLY income!”

Now, when Bob first said this I was stunned. My mind rebelled and I thought it impossible. I thought of every reason why this was an unrealistic goal that couldn’t be achieved and, believe me, I found a good few!

But I trusted Bob and knew that he would never set me up for a fall and so I looked at it again, only this time I sought reasons why it WAS possible and, more importantly, how what actions I could take to make it a reality.

One of the first steps I took was to look at Google images of money.

Seriously.

I figured that if making this huge jump in come were my goal then it would be really useful to have a mental picture of what different amounts of money looked like so that I could visualise it and give my reticular activating system something to work on.

Well, the short story is, it worked!

Not all at once but I took my income to double, triple, quadruple and then 10 times my old annual income in a very short space of time. Then I hit my target and took it through to the goal of taking annual to monthly income and the rest is history.

See, what I realised is that the $100,000 that most people seem to struggle a lifetime for is actually very little. We should ALL be able to do this. Likewise a million.(I’m not there yet but I will be) : )

In fact, a big part of getting your hands on that kind of money is, I believe, not thinking of it as a LOT on money and, instead thinking of it as a ridiculously small target.

Because, in many ways it is!

I mean,look at this…

Here’s a $100 dollar bill. This is currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation and, unless you’re VERY  unlucky you’ve likely had a good few of them pass through your hands during your life.

Here’s what $10,000 looks like. It’s 100 x $10 and it’s a little over half inch thick and would easily fit in your pocket. Amazingly, the average family only earns between 3 and 4 of these little bundles combined.

Here’s what a MILLION looks like. 100 bundles of $10,000. Still not too much to look at. You could easily fit this into a briefcase. Amazingly, most people (because of their limited thinking) will not lay their hands on this much money from all of their years at work combined.

What’s next? Well, what about $100,000,000? That’s 100 x $,1000,000 stacked on a normal sized pallet. Impressive, huh?

What’s next? Well, let’s get into Bill Gates territory and look at what it’s like to be a billionaire shall we? $1,000,000,000 is 1000 bundles of $1,000,000 which, as you can see is 8 full pallets of cash. Apparently, Bill has about 40 times this amount. Wonder if he’ll lend me some : )

But even Bill Gates is small-fry compared to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers who have wealth in the trillions of dollars. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it’s one million times million. It’s a thousand times one  billion. That’s a one followed by 12 zeros.

One TRILLION dollars would cover an area LARGER than a football field…

… and those pallets are DOUBLE stacked too!

And the crazy thing is that the Rothschild wealth is conservatively estimated to be in the region of 15-20 trillion by many and as much as 100 trillion by others.

Can you imagine between 15 and 100 football fields jam-packed two pallets high with $100 bills? Amazing, right?

So…

Now that you’ve seen all this, think about that financial goal you really want to hear in the next 12 months or so. It’s not really so big anymore is it? You’re not asking for too much are you?

Think bigger my friend : )

You serve no-one, let alone yourself, by thinking small.

The MAGIC Hundred

Change YOUR World… Start A Goals Revolution!

With Christmas and New Year fast approaching, a lot of the conversation in the communities I run online and the businesses I run offline seems to be about ‘getting through’ the holidays and then ‘getting on’ with pursuing health and fitness, relationship and financial goals from January 1st.

Nothing wrong with that, of course (though personally I find that those who achieve the most impressive and rapid results are always those who start TODAY. Even in some small way), after all people are busy, they’re distracted and they have all manner of obstacles preventing them from getting what they want when the holiday season rolls around.

But here’s the interesting thing.

Considering people are waiting til ‘the time is right’ to get started on pursuing their goals(presumably ‘right’ meaning that there’s nothing standing in their way), there seems to be a lot of discussion about avoiding the disappointment of failure by not setting goals too high and not over reaching.

In effect, these conversations are saying “Don’t go for what you REALLY want, go for what you think you can get”

I can understand why people think this way.

They’re scared of ‘failing’ at their diets, their relationships, their businesses and their dreams so instead they play it small by choosing to rationalise and justify their goals instead of going for what they really want.

What they REALLY dream about.

Instead of dreaming the big, amazing, inspiring dreams they settle for what’s ‘realistic’.

In other words, they settle for what someone else has told them either is or is not possible.

I see it all the time in my London personal training studios where people who really, desperately want to lose 50lbs set goals of only 10-15lbs ‘because it’s more realistic’ and who, in doing so, rob themselves of all the power, passion and purpose required to not only achieve the big goal but, ultimately, the small goal too.

It’s true!

Most of the people who set themselves smaller goals because they’ve rationalised them to be more ‘realistic’ have just as hard a time bringing these small goals to life as they would have had if they’d committed to the big ones.

Strange but true.

And here’s why.

Small goals are all fine and dandy but, the truth is, most people aren’t looking for small improvements in their lives. They want big, Huge, ENORMOUS, life changing things to happen to them rather than small, incremental and often inconsequential goals.

Big goals get you out of bed on a cold, damp and dark winters morning. Small ones have you telling yourself “Go back to sleep, you can do it later”

Big goals have you sticking with your diet no matter what. Small goals have you saying “Well, ONE piece won’t hurt…”

Big goals have you thinking and acting big. Small goals have you thinking and acting… small!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out does it?

The key to making big, dramatic changes to your life, whether they be in your weight, your fitness, your relationships, your finances or anything else is to set yourself goals that would literally revolutionise your life rather than those that only serve to rationalise why you can’t have more.

The word ‘revolution’ comes from the Latin ‘Revolutio’ and means literally ‘a turn around’. Your life turns around by thinking big, powerful, passionate thoughts of what you WANT from your life and then taking the steps to make that happen, NOT by containing your thinking only to those things that you believe are easy.

The truth is, those things that are easiest to do are also the exact same things that are easy NOT to do.

Pushing your plate away when you’re full is easy to do… but easy not to.

Taking 15 minutes a day to exercise is easy to do… but easy not to.

Saving £1 a day is easy to do… but easy not to.

There’s no power, passion, purpose or promise in the small goals that don’t really get your juices flowing. The real power is in those big, scary, exciting goals that, once achieved, would literally turn your life around.

In other words, Revolutionary Goals NOT rational ones.

Think big.

Then, when you’ve though big, think BIGGER!

Design the grandest, highest, most perfect vision of your goal in your mind THEN take that rationale mind of yours and break the big goal down into smaller goals and pursue them with everything you have.

You CAN be, do an have what you want y’know…

So, what do you want? : )

Set a revolutionary goal TODAY. Don’t wait for New Year. Set it today and you’ll have 3 weeks toard your goal in the bag before dawn on the first day of 2010.

Something that even most of the Experts, Guru’s, Scientists, Philosophers and Clerics either don’t know or won’t tell you about getting what you want from your life?

They’re only giving you their opinion about what’s good or bad, right or wrong, better or worse in relation to their own view of things.

Get Into The Arena If You Want Success

Hey there!

I hope you’re having a great day today and that life’s treating you good.

Today I wanted to share with you one of my favourite success quotes of all time from Theodore Roosevelt.

It never fails to remind me to ‘get in there’ and take action rather than watching life from the sidelines.

I sincerely hope it does the same for you, my friend : )
