Are You Grasping At Water? (Maybe That’s Why You’re Not Achieving Your Goals)

I don’t know where I first came across the concept of grasping water. To be honest, I think it was in some cheesy martial-arts flick of some kind or it could’ve been a book, but whatever it was, the idea stuck with me and has made an impact that provides me with an automatic ‘reset’ whenever I’m getting stressed out by circumstances.

I seem to remember a martial arts master talking to an acolyte and explaining that the way he was going through life was like grasping at water.

As an example, he told the young trainee to throw his hands into the water of a nearby pool and grasp for all he was worth in his maximum effort to bring forth as much water as he could in a single attempt.

The young man took a stance, plunged his arm as deep as his elbow into the cold, crystal clear water, closed his fist and pulled his arm back up toward his face.

“Open you hand and show me what you have as a result of your efforts” said the master and the youth complied.

As you can guess, when he opened his hand, nothing but the fainted sheen of water could be seen upon the skin.

“Try again” said the old man and the youth did, this time moving faster, striking harder and gripping for all he was worth. Each time, the same thing happened; a slightly damp hand and nothing more.

Finally, the master walked to the edge of the pool, opened his hand and slowly placed it beneath the surface. With fingers together and his hand shaped into a shallow bowl he raised his hand from the pool to his lips and drank the cool water straight from his palm.

“More often that not” the old man said “in order to get the rewards you seek you have to relax and not try so hard. You have to work with the tools you’ve been given rather than force yourself upon circumstances.

The wise person knows that when what they seek keeps slipping through their fingers, that they’re probably trying too hard. When they realise this, they slow down, relax and cease grasping and water, and as soon as they do… their thirst is quenched”

I took some poetic licence with the story, of course, but that’s essentially how I remember it.

How does that help me and more to the point, how can it help YOU?

Well, like the master says, whenever you’re giving all you’ve got, whenever you’re pushing up against what feels like an immovable object, sometimes, in fact more often than not, the solution lies in slowing down, relaxing and taking the time to really think about whether you’re working as smart as you could be.

We can ALL work harder than we are, but since when was the answer to working too hard to work harder still?

Working smarter always beats working harder.

Always and in all ways.

Stop grasping at water!

Ordinary Miracles

Some days things just touch me.

Like tonight, sitting here with my son Connor and my wife Deana watching the movie Charlotte’s Web.

Lovely little film with a great life lesson that’s wonderful to share with your children, like looking through the facade and seeing people for who they really are and being loyal and loving to your friends.

We really enjoyed it but you know, what really hit me most was the lyrics to the song on the closing credits.

Yes, I’m a big softie (weird for a former soldier I know) but the words meant a lot.

Check them out here and tell me you don’t feel the magic : )

Pay It Forward – The True Secret To Success And Happiness

Most of the time we go through life feeling like no-one really ‘gets’ or understands us.

Most of the time we’re just waiting for someone to notice our plight and offer us just a few words of encouragement, a few golden nuggets of wisdom or maybe even a hug.

And, of course, when we actually GET those encouragements, words of wisdom and hugs we feel great, right?

So think on this…

What do you think life would be like if YOU were giving the encouragement, words of wisdom and hugs to others?

Don’t you think you’d change their lives, even if only for a few moments, hours, days or weeks?

Don’t you think that being the giver of those things you most want to receive for yourself would put you in a better position to attract them to you?

Ever heard the saying “as you sow, so shall you reap” by any chance?

It’s the strangest of all truths, but that which you pay forward always, always, ALWAYS gets paid back.

Pay it forward today and see the truth of this for yourself.

Reach out, touch and help someone today.

Buy someone a card.

Send flowers.

Buy a cup of coffee for someone you don’t normally buy for.

Take the time for a chat.

Phone your mum.

Hug your kids, even the grown up ones.

Pay it forward, change someone’s life then change yours as a result.

Please?

I love hearing how these principles actually work for people : )

End Of Another Decade… What’s Changed For You?

Y’know, I’m sitting here in my hotel room in Florida where I’m vacationing with my family and was thinking of what to write to you today when something dawned on me.

Something really obvious but that completely slipped my attention until now.

Not only are we about to celebrate a new year but we’re  about to see the start of yet another decade too… amazing!

Made me think about just how much my own life has changed in the last 10 years.

Back then I was on £5 an hour, lived on a housing estate and struggled to pay even my bills yet now I own several businesses that do amazingly well, I own my own home, vacation in Luxury all round the World and am a published author, TV presenter and educator.

Crazy stuff! : )

My life has totally transformed over the last 10 years with every single facet of my life from my relationships, my education, my income and every other area seeing massive and positive impact over that time.

What about you?

What have YOUR last 10 years added to your life?

Are you healthier, wealthier, wiser and happier than you  were 10 years ago or has the last decade been one long groundhog-day where the same things have happened over and over and over again?

I hope it’s the former but if by chance you answered  positive to the latter then I want to tell you that you can make the next days, weeks, months, years and decades stunningly different to the ones you’ve just experienced by making a really small yet amazingly powerful change to how you go about your life.

The change?

MAKE A DECISION!

That’s it. Make a decision for things to be different in your life in the days ahead… starting today!

The word ‘decision’ shares its roots with the word ‘incision’ and means literally ‘to cut off from all other possibility’.

That means that when you decide to get to your target weight, you cut yourself off from all the foods that will stop you from getting there, no if’s, no but’s.

It means that when you decide to double your annual income you commit to working harder, working smarter and educating yourself to a higher standard so that you qualify for the income you seek… no if’s, no but’s.

See, decisions aren’t a ‘I’ll give it a go’ kind of deal. They’re a ‘I’m gonna keep doing this until it works or I discover a better way’ kind of deal.

That was what I did 10 years ago. I DECIDED that my life was going to be great and here I am now telling you that it is… cool huh? : )

But it didn’t take me 10 years for things to change. The change happened right away, practically as soon as I was  100% committed.

Within 100 days (that’s just 3 months) I went from £5 an hour to £50, owning my own business, appearing on National TV and radio and much, much more besides.

Success can come REAL fast, when you know what you want and you DECIDE with all your mind, heart and soul that you’re going to have it.

YOUR success will come fast too, I know it.

Just take the next few days to write down what you REALLY want your next decade to bring you and ask yourself “am I ready to commit 100% to making that a reality in my life?” and if you answer ‘YES!’ then prove it.

Take some action, even a tiny one, right away. It doesn’t matter  what it is, just take a small action to cement your decision in

reality.

THAT’s how you change your life, my friend. It’s nothing more than knowing what you want and acting on it.

So go act! : )

Three Questions You MUST Ask If You Want To Achieve Success In 2010!

Well, it’s Christmas day at last and I’m getting ready to hit Disney over here on my family vacation in Florida but before I do I thought I’d take a couple of minutes to leave a little thought for today to help those of you who are already thinking ahead toward 2010.

See, right about now I start working on my 1st MAGIC Hundred list of the year, paying some real thought as to what I want to be, do and have in my life during those first hundred days but before I do, before I start writing out my big ‘wish list’, I always take a little time to ask myself three questions related to my previous attempts at achieving my dreams.

Makes sense when you think about it, after all, if you don’t take the time to learn from both your successes and your mistakes then you’re dooming yourself to repeating unnecessary actions over and over whilst missing out on opportunities to do MORE of what works, right?

So what are these 3 questions?

#1: What worked well? – Simply taking the time to identify all of the things that worked really well for me in 2009 means that I can not only repeat these actions but commit to doing MORE of them… and sooner!

#2: What did I learn? – Every single success and ‘failure’ I make over the course of my year teaches me something and, as long as I pay attention to what I’m being taught, I can apply whatever I’ve learned to accelerate my results the next time around. Funnily enough, most people never really reflect on what they’ve learned in the previous year. Maybe that’s why they tend to make the same mistakes over and over and over and…

#3: What will I do next time? – Yes, I ask (and answer) this question BEFORE I set out on my next round of goals and dreams. This saves the make-it-up-as-I-go-along approach that most people seem to adopt on January 1st. By deciding IN ADVANCE what I’m going to do when faced with a certain problem or puzzle I’m going to avoid that reactive knee-jerk ‘thing’ that most people get when faced with a problem. Saves me so much hassle and negativity too!

So there you go, a nice short message for you today but, hopefully, a useful one.

As you start to think about what 2010 has in store for you over the next few days, try first asking yourself ‘the three questions’ and I guarantee you’ll not only set better goals in the first place, but will be infinitely more likely to have them come true.

And hey, if you’re game, why not tell me what YOUR answers to the 3 questions are right here on this blog? It might help you get clearer on what you need to do next : )

STILL Thinking Too Small For Your Goals? Here’s A TRILLION Dollars!

I got an email this morning from one of my MAGIC Hundred Goal Achievement Program readers telling me that although he was making great progress on his MAGIC hundred, he was still struggling to come to terms with his ‘big’ financial goal of breaking the six figure income barrier. He said he just couldn’t believe or see a way that that would ever happen.

I can’t blame him in a way, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was desperate to do the same and I too couldn’t see a way that I could ever make that a reality in my own life  either.

Then one day my mentor Bob Proctor said, “You’ve got to stop thinking small and incrementally and instead focus on achieving the HUGE goals you really want. Instead of trying to increase your monthly or annual income by a fraction, set yourself THIS goal…

…make your annual income your new MONTHLY income!”

Now, when Bob first said this I was stunned. My mind rebelled and I thought it impossible. I thought of every reason why this was an unrealistic goal that couldn’t be achieved and, believe me, I found a good few!

But I trusted Bob and knew that he would never set me up for a fall and so I looked at it again, only this time I sought reasons why it WAS possible and, more importantly, how what actions I could take to make it a reality.

One of the first steps I took was to look at Google images of money.

Seriously.

I figured that if making this huge jump in come were my goal then it would be really useful to have a mental picture of what different amounts of money looked like so that I could visualise it and give my reticular activating system something to work on.

Well, the short story is, it worked!

Not all at once but I took my income to double, triple, quadruple and then 10 times my old annual income in a very short space of time. Then I hit my target and took it through to the goal of taking annual to monthly income and the rest is history.

See, what I realised is that the $100,000 that most people seem to struggle a lifetime for is actually very little. We should ALL be able to do this. Likewise a million.(I’m not there yet but I will be) : )

In fact, a big part of getting your hands on that kind of money is, I believe, not thinking of it as a LOT on money and, instead thinking of it as a ridiculously small target.

Because, in many ways it is!

I mean,look at this…

Here’s a $100 dollar bill. This is currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation and, unless you’re VERY  unlucky you’ve likely had a good few of them pass through your hands during your life.

bill

Here’s what $10,000 looks like. It’s 100 x $10 and it’s a little over half inch thick and would easily fit in your pocket. Amazingly, the average family only earns between 3 and 4 of these little bundles combined.

packet

Here’s what a MILLION looks like. 100 bundles of $10,000. Still not too much to look at. You could easily fit this into a briefcase. Amazingly, most people (because of their limited thinking) will not lay their hands on this much money from all of their years at work combined.

pile

What’s next? Well, what about $100,000,000? That’s 100 x $,1000,000 stacked on a normal sized pallet. Impressive, huh?

pallet

What’s next? Well, let’s get into Bill Gates territory and look at what it’s like to be a billionaire shall we? $1,000,000,000 is 1000 bundles of $1,000,000 which, as you can see is 8 full pallets of cash. Apparently, Bill has about 40 times this amount. Wonder if he’ll lend me some : )

pallet_x_10

But even Bill Gates is small-fry compared to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers who have wealth in the trillions of dollars. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it’s one million times million. It’s a thousand times one  billion. That’s a one followed by 12 zeros.

One TRILLION dollars would cover an area LARGER than a football field…

pallet_x_10000

… and those pallets are DOUBLE stacked too!

And the crazy thing is that the Rothschild wealth is conservatively estimated to be in the region of 15-20 trillion by many and as much as 100 trillion by others.

Can you imagine between 15 and 100 football fields jam-packed two pallets high with $100 bills? Amazing, right?

So…

Now that you’ve seen all this, think about that financial goal you really want to hear in the next 12 months or so. It’s not really so big anymore is it? You’re not asking for too much are you?

Think bigger my friend : )

You serve no-one, let alone yourself, by thinking small.

Are You Powerful Beyond Measure?

I’ve always loved the quote ‘Our Deepest Fear’ from Marianne Williamson’s ‘Return To Love. It seems to sum up so many powerful rules for being successful and happy that I’ve always felt it to hold serious power in its own right too.

It certainly serves to inspire me anyway.

In fact, I even have a tattoo on my wrist written in Temple Thai writing with the words ‘Shan Koo Poo Yingyai’ which means ‘I am powerful beyond measure’ to remind me of this super-powerful principle.

You don’t have to go that far of course, but remembering the just how powerful you really are is no bad thing right?

Believing it is even better!

Watch this excellent short video from the movie ‘Coach Carter’ to get an instant shot of this powerful motivational quote.

Great isn’t it?

It sends chills down my spine every time I hear it and invigorates me every time I’m in need of a little boost myself (yeah, it happens : ) ).

Here are the words… just in case!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Print it off, pin it to your fridge, tape it to your PC, carry it in your wallet… get a tattoo : )

Just keep it near you and read it daily… it’ll change your life!
